Burial and cremation describe the form of disposition, not the amount of care or meaning in a funeral. Either choice can include visitation, a formal funeral, a personal memorial, a graveside gathering, or a later celebration of life.
Burial
Burial usually involves a cemetery plot, casket, cemetery coordination, transportation, and a committal at the graveside. A cemetery may require an outer burial container even though state law may not.
Direct cremation
Direct cremation occurs without a viewing or ceremony beforehand. A casket is not required; an alternative container may be used. A memorial gathering can still be held before or after the cremation.
Cremation with services
Families may arrange visitation, a funeral, or a chapel service before cremation, or gather afterward with the urn or without the cremated remains present.

Consider known wishes, cultural or religious practices, the desired gathering, permanent placement, travel, timing, environmental preferences, cemetery access, and the complete itemized cost of each plan.

A funeral director should explain both paths without ranking them. Ask for the General Price List and written price information before selecting goods or services.
