What to Do When a Death Occurs

A practical reference for families. Individual circumstances and state requirements vary; our team can explain what applies to your arrangement.

Luminous funeral home reception with limestone and light oak

The first hours after a death can feel unclear. You do not need to organize the whole funeral before making the first call. Begin with the place where the death occurred and one reliable contact person.

If the death occurs in a hospital or care facility

Staff will follow their required procedures and tell you when a funeral home may be contacted. Call ÉTERNELL at (617) 555-0148; we will speak with the facility, confirm the release process, and arrange transfer into our care.

If the death occurs at home

The correct first step depends on whether hospice or another care team was involved and on local requirements. Follow the instructions of the attending professional or appropriate authority, then call us for funeral coordination.

Information for the first call

Share the name and location of the person who died, the facility or authority involved, your contact information, and any immediate cultural or religious timing needs. Call even if some details are not yet available.

The arrangement conference can wait

Once immediate care has been coordinated, we schedule a meeting to discuss burial or cremation, the service, documents, and costs. There is no need to choose a casket, urn, or ceremony during the first phone call.

Keep one short list

Write down the names of key family contacts, known wishes, important clergy or community contacts, and urgent scheduling constraints. ÉTERNELL will provide the longer document checklist at the arrangement conference.

A NOTE FROM OUR TEAM

You can ask us to slow the process down.

We can review decisions one at a time, explain available choices, and provide applicable price information in writing before arrangements are completed.
